Parasitic "Co-infections"
Normally when a person is infected with a parasitic disease, people assume that they only have one parasite that is causing them trouble. However, I read an article about a rare phenomena in which different parasites invade the body at the same time. This phenomena is called a "co-infection". To some this may not sound unusual, as it is likely to get sick with different diseases or infections at the same time. The interesting thing is that in the case of the article I read, the two parasites in a patient were not working together to infect the body, but were competing for the resources in the host.
The article mentions the co-infection case of malaria and hookworms. These two parasites get their resources from human blood. Scientists noticed that when medication was given to patients to treat their worm infection, the malaria infection became more prevalent. From more studies, they were able to determine that malaria-causing parasites and hookworms formed a food-chain ecosystem in a human host. What this means is that malaria-causing parasites and hookworms were competing for resources rather than working together to cause more damage to the patient.
One example the article gave was the interaction between a species of malaria-causing parasite called Plasmodium vivax, hookworms, and another malaria-causing parasite called P. falciparum. Plasmodium vivax feeds on specific red blood cells in the body and is out competed by hookworms that feed on unspecific red blood cells. This keeps Plasmodium vivax in check and prevents it from spreading throughout the blood. P. falciparum feed on more blood cells than hookworms which can lead this parasite to expand faster than the worms.
Overall, these parasites, if infecting a patient at the same time, keep themselves in check and targeting only one can be bad for a patient. What this tells scientists and doctors is that they need to be strategic when prescribing medication and treatments to patients with co-infections. This is the kind of information that is fascinating to me. Many of us can learn a great deal from special cases like the one I read about. When traveling abroad, we should be wary about parasitic infections we may contract and also pay close attention to the symptoms we may get. It could be possible that we can get co-infections and knowing before a diagnose can help identify this special case and get the appropriate treatments needed to cure them.

First and foremost, yay! If you are sick person? You're not in the dark anymore, and that's half the battle. Secondly, don't get discouraged.
